Most countries keep some form documentation of known casualties from World War 2. However, the graves of these soldiers are not always known. Many of them were buried in mass graves, or never buried at all. If the burial of a soldier is known, it is likely recorded in public records.

The burned body that the Soviets claimed to be that of Adolph Hitler was said to be buried near Brandenburg. In 1970 they disinterred the remains, cremated them, and scattered the ashes in the Elbe River. So there is no Hitler burial place.

If you know where the veteran died (or his hometown) there should either be an obituary in the local paper or, lacking that, a death certificate showing the date of death, along with burial details (cemetery). A letter (or call) should give you that information.

Only about one-fourth of American WWII dead remain overseas in the ABMC cemeteries. The rest were brought back to the states at the request of their next of kin. I used to have a web address for a database that tried to list all of these, but I cant find it. Some are in National Cemeteries in the US, others are in regular cemeteries all over America.
