After the Seven Years' War (also known in America as the French and Indian War), England's debt had greatly increased. The mother country turned to her colonies, who had paid little to nothing for their protection during the war. Taxes in the colonies began to increase as multiple laws and acts were passed, including the Sugar Act (1764) , the Stamp Act (1765), and the Quartering Act (1765). As taxes grew, resentment of the mother country grew. Numerous rebellions and uprisings occurred, such as the Boston Tea Party. The colonists were not initially looking for independence from the mother country, only more relaxed laws. However colonists eventually snapped and, starting with the Lexington Massacre, war broke out.
