There was a build up to the revolution. On April 19, 1775 the Battle at the bridge of Concord happened and as a result of that and the Boston Tea Party the king sent more troops into Boston and the colonies. The fallacy about the revolution is that it wasn't so much over high taxes ( the tea tax was actually lowered and not raised which up set the smugglers bringing in Dutch tea. This made the price of their tea higher) but over the many things listed to the king in the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration has a page and a half of the things that the king has did to the people of the colonies. So, in July of 1776 the colonies declared themselves free of the king's rule. Of course, this upset him but he still didn't take it as a real threat until Bunker Hill (Breeds Hill) and that is when he decided to escalate the war that had begun.
