Christianity did not affect the Roman economy. The economy was not based on religions and people from all walks of life converted to Christianity and carried on with their economic activities. Christianity had more social effects than economic ones.

State patronage of the Christian Church was a significant part of Emperor Constantine's fiscal extravagance, along with his own personal lifestyle, extravagant building programs (including magnificent churches built at state expense) and military operations. These all served to weigh down the empire, which demanded higher and higher taxes, which of necessity fell on the middle classes as the rich could avoid taxation. Edward Gibbon says (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) the scourge and the rack were used against those whose extreme poverty could not support this unjust tax. Mothers sold their children, and fathers prostituted their daughters to pay the tax.
