Europe had the jump from the fuedal age to the dark age and on to the middle ages with the advances in technology and what they considered being civilized. Japan had a fuedal age but didnt go much futher than that on its own. when the europeans came to japan the technology advanced.to answer the question: japan was (and to a certain degree still is) very centered around tradition and culture. where as the europeans tended to throw out tradition in favour of whats more practicle. samurai where still in place until around the mid 18 hundreds while europes having its industrial age, for example.
