President John F. Kennedy played a crucial role in averting the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 by implementing a naval blockade, or "quarantine," to prevent further Soviet shipments of missiles to Cuba. He also engaged in intense diplomatic negotiations with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, ultimately agreeing to a secret deal that involved the U.S. removing its missiles from Turkey in exchange for the withdrawal of Soviet missiles from Cuba. Kennedy's measured response and willingness to communicate directly with Khrushchev helped de-escalate the situation and prevent a potential nuclear conflict.
President Kennedy secretly offered Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev the removal of U.S. missiles from Turkey in exchange for the withdrawal of Soviet missiles from Cuba. This concession was not publicly acknowledged at the time, allowing both leaders to save face. The agreement effectively de-escalated the crisis and averted potential military conflict, leading to a mutual understanding between the superpowers.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Robert Kennedy meets with Soviet Ambassador Anatoly F. Dobrynin and agrees privately that once the crisis is resolved, the United States will withdraw its Jupiter missiles from Turkey. No one withdrew from anywhere, only weapons of a specific type were withdrawn and that was "Atomic Weapons Capable" were removed from Cuba. and as a quid pro quo the US removed its IRBM's from Turkey. The Soviets maintained a presence in Cuba, and the US maintained a presence in Turkey. It was a diplomatic method for the Soviets to save face in what had become an International Nuclear Crisis. (Like it or Leave it, Kennedy faced up to and won against Kruchev, in the closest showdown in the Cold War). Both men won. Both Countries won. The Earth won. USC

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, both the US and the USSR recognized the potential for nuclear confrontation that could lead to catastrophic consequences. The intense standoff heightened fears of mutual destruction, prompting them to seek a diplomatic resolution. Negotiation allowed both superpowers to save face while avoiding escalation, leading to a compromise that included the US agreeing to withdraw missiles from Turkey in exchange for the USSR removing its missiles from Cuba. This pivotal moment underscored the necessity of communication and diplomacy in managing Cold War tensions.
Two were established, an economic boycott in February of 1962 and the Missile Crisis to prevent the introduction of Soviet weapons in October of the same year. While it is not completely perfect, I suggest seeing the Costner film (based on books about and tapes of the administration) titled Thirteen Days. It is the quickest way to get a good idea of the tension and the situation. The blockade (quarantine) during the missile crisis was because Cuba was (viewed as) a pawn of the USSR and they placed rocket-powered nuclear warheads on Cuban soil aimed at the USA. The blockade was a compromise measure by the Kennedy administration between invading Cuba and thus setting off a likely nuclear exchange with the USSR due to treaties and (being seen to be) doing nothing and being an appeaser to the USSR. Bobby Kennedy worked very hard to handle the politics in the USA and to get buy-in from the cabinet and other stakeholders in the government to avoid military action. The Blockade prevented further buildup of offensive arms aimed at the USA in the western hemisphere and gave the USA and USSR time to negotiate and it gave the USSR time to dismantle the in-place missiles and to save face. Essentially it was a strategic response to an aggressive move by the USSR in the cold war.

Kennedy's administration was known as the New Frontier - outer space. His time in office was short, so there are no major legislative agendas he worked on, however, he did save the world from a thermonuclear war from occurring during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 through diplomacy and not military action. Had military action occurred the world as we know it would have been destroyed. Yes, he was successful in the Cold War.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was ultimately resolved through a series of compromises between the United States and the Soviet Union. The U.S. agreed to withdraw its nuclear missiles from Turkey and Italy, while the Soviet Union pledged to remove its missiles from Cuba. Additionally, both nations established a direct communication line, known as the "Hotline," to prevent future misunderstandings. This resolution allowed both superpowers to save face while de-escalating a potentially catastrophic conflict.
He made a deal with the Russians, who supplied missiles to Cuba. The deal was that if the Russians took the missiles out of Cuba, the USA would take their missiles out of Turkey. Both sides made concessions in order to save face and avert WWIII.
