King James II restricted the colonists' rights through the establishment of the Dominion of New England in 1686, which centralized control over multiple colonies and diminished their autonomy. He appointed a royal governor, Sir Edmund Andros, who enforced strict regulations, dissolved local assemblies, and imposed taxes without colonial consent.
