Prince Henry the Navigator built a Seamanship school in Sagres, in the southwesternmost, point of Portugal, and continental Europe. The portuguese also invented the astrolobe. So basicaly Portugal lead the way with it's superior tech and professionals. Pretty much how any country leads the way in anything.
Batolomeu Diaz, a Portuguese noblemen and the sailing master of the Naval Ship Sao Cristovao was the first European to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. Before a voyage to Asia was possible they had to know that it was possible to go around Africa. Vasco da Gama then became the first European to complete a sea trip from Europe to Asia (India) 10 years later
