When the war was over in Europe and the Nazis surrendered by signing the instrument of surrender Prime Minister Churchill and King George declared May 8th to be VE (Victory over Europe) day. It became a national holiday. The streets were filled with millions of people in both England and the United States. They began whooping it up with cheers, dancing, music, confetti, celebration food and drink and even the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret joined the people in the streets. It became a national holiday in Canada and the US too. The troops in Europe celebrated with the peoples of the nations (except in Germany where they felt conquered) Later in August came VJ day (victory over Japan). Same thing happened in the streets.
