Much of its industry and infrastructure was very badly damaged. It lost its independence, first to Germany and the Soviet Union and towards the end of WW2 it became a Soviet satellite. The Nazis tried to liquidate its intellectuals and the Soviet Union murdered many of its army officers. In all, Poland lost about 6 million dead in WW2, of whom about half were Jews. Poland regained its independence at the end of the 1980s.
