American nationalism surged during this time influencing such areas as foreign policy and other issues. John Quincy Adams used his nationalistic idea to sign the Treaty of 1818 with Britain that permitted Americans to share the coveted Newfoundland fisheries with England. It further provided for a ten-year point occupation of the untamed Oregon country. Florida was also a subject of contention during this time. Many revolutions were being carried out in Southern American and Spain was very held up with them. Andrew Jackson saw this as an opportunity to add Florida to the United States. Many people were discontent with this, but nationalist John Quincy Adams believed that taking the offensive was the right course of action. Meanwhile in Europe, the reign of Napoleon showed that democracy could cause major problems. This caused a pro-monarchial time in Europe. Many Americans were afraid that they would come interfere with American affairs. As a result of this, the Monroe Doctrine was drawn up that encouraged isolationism and non intervention.
