Communism didn't last in Russia because Stalin had a warped idea of communism. It failed because it never was true communism, but was always corrupted. I believe it was not communism in the USSR, but more of a deadly mix of Socialism and Totalitarianism.
No one believed the rise of communism was a greater threat than Germany during WWII. Western Europe was allied with communist Russia during WWII, so they did not wish to destroy their ally. It wasn't until after WWII that fear shifted to the rise of communism, as communism spread all over Eastern Europe and even divided Germany.
World War I had NOTHING to do with communism. Yea. It was during and after WWII. And the main country that fought to spread is was the Soviet Union, or Russia.
The United States fought both Cuba and Russia to fight the spread of communism. One effect of this was the Cold War which lasted through much of the 1950s and 1060s.

Russia went communist during WWI. After the Great War, there was a fear that Communism would sweep the world. It did not happen of course, but, people feared the spread of Communism after the War ended in Nov. 11, 1918.
Communism was developed out of the need to replace the ruling class of the Cezars of Russia. It was to give those in Russia and Utopian ideal.
