The U.S. fought with Britain and Mexico over the Oregon and Texas territories. The U.S. gained Texas in a war with Mexico but did not gain Oregon through a war. Advocates of Manifest Destiny called for war with Great Britain under the slogan of "fifty-four forty or fight", a reference to the latitude they wanted the US to claim from England. Instead of going to war, the US negotiated with England and the border was established at the 49th parallel.
For many years in the early to mid-1800s, America and Britain agreed upon "joint occupancy" of the Oregon Territory. America claimed land all the way up to the 54040' while Britain claimed land as far south as the 420 . President Polk was elected and he encouraged Manifest Destiny, stating that America's destiny included as much land gain as possible. Part of that was the entire Oregon territory. There were threats of war over the land. (Common slogan: Fifty-four Forty or fight!) Moderation won out over calls for war and the 49th parallel was agreed to as the place of the divide, America getting all land south and the UK, all land north in the Oregon Treaty.
America and Britain decided to divide the Oregon Territory at the 49th parallel during the Oregon Treaty of 1846. This agreement established the boundary between British North America and the United States, effectively giving the U.S. control over what is now the Pacific Northwest, including present-day Oregon, Washington, and parts of Idaho and Montana. The treaty was a resolution to ongoing disputes and was aimed at preventing further conflict over the territory.
As far as US and Britain over the Oregon Boundary, President Polk wanted the land and figured that Britain was not willing to fight over it. Britain gave the US almost everything it wanted. No troops were needed but both sides did have some ships. With Mexico, the US sent a full scale invading army and took what it wanted. Later with the Gasden Purchase it took some more but this time it paid for it.

weel am on his side whatever he said
Polk had a good reason for avoiding war with britain over Oregon. By 1846, he had so much bigger troubles brewing with Mexico over Texas..........
Great Britain
Polk did not really want to fight Britain. Instead, in 1846, he agreed to a compromise. Oregon was divided at latitude 49°N. Britain got the lands north of the line, and the United States got the lands south of the line.

Polk's Secretary of State, James Buchanan negotiated a treaty with Great Britain that provided a peaceful solution to the Oregon boundary dispute. They settled for less than the 54th parallel boundary Polk had campaigned for .
The dispute over the northern boundary of the U.S. claim to the Oregon Territory was was settled in the Treaty of Oregon of 1846, during the presidency of James K. Polk. The treaty established the boundary between British Canada and the U.S. at 49-degrees latitude. -- Contributed by Ray Kovach, Chicago, IL
Russia, Spain and Great Britain also had claims on the oregon territory
The dispute over where the Oregon boundary was located was between the United States and Great Britain. They were in disagreement on where the boarder between Oregon and Canada should be drawn.
