Blitzkrieg is German for lightning and that was the idea behind the launching of its attacks. Strike fast and its all over. The world had never seen a highly mechanised and thereby highly mobile Army before. The many Panzer [tank] Divisions led the attacks at incredible speed, with well armed, well trained, troops in the rear. The Countries and States of Europe could not withstand the onslaught and fell quickly one by one.
Blitzkrieg was a military attack strategy designed by the Nazi Germans. The Allied Forces adapted this method too.
The speed at which it was executed and how long it took the defending group to surrender. The Blitzkrieg could not support a long-term attack.
A swift military attack is now called a "blitz" or "blitzkrieg" after the rapid maneuvers of the German Army at the beginning of World War 2. The terms are German for "lightning" or "lightning war," respectively.
The German Lightning War (Blitzkrieg) is a tactic used in the 2nd World War. It employs full military resources to attack the enemy and dispatch him quickly with giving him a chance to retaliate. A good example of use of the Blitzkrieg is the invasion of Russia. Here a mix of infantry and armoured troops (tanks and trucks) invaded Russia while German Air Force overhead was laying waste to defences and the Russia planes still in the hangars on the ground.
Germans named their strategy Blitzkrieg or "Lightning War". The strategy was very inovative at the time and cosisted of 3 steps: 1. armored vehicles and tanks would attack the enemy battle line at a single point, push trough and leave this "gap" for... 2.the infantry and support units to follow trough after which... 3.the German army would attack their enemy from behind and move on. The name Blitzkrieg was given to this strategy because the attacks were fast and over quickly, and allowed the Nazi to quickly take up large territories. Sometimes, they would move at the speed of 200km per day which is huge for an army of that time especially if you have to fight at every 10km.
