During the Cold War years, the US decided early on to attempt to contain the spread of communism. Policy was to give aid to governments fighting communist takeovers. Also by diplomatic means this policy was executed. In the cases of Korea and Vietnam, actual force was used. This drastic step fell into the idea called the domino theory. The belief was that if one country fell to communism, then nearby nations would also "fall like dominoes" to the forces of communism. In South East Asia, the US headed an organization called SEATO to fight this.
