At one point the US had 500,000 troops in Vietnam. The US was trying to keep communism from spreading in southeast Asia. The US did not wish to escalate the war into a larger theater. With that said, the US played a more defensive war. For example, the US did not invade North Vietnam. Popular unrest on the American home front became shocked at US losses. President Nixon end the war in 1973.
