The Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred in 1964 not 1965. Probably no choppers were lost during that confrontation. The engagement was primarily between US destroyers and NVN (North Vietnamese Navy) patrol boats; of which supposedly, one or more of the Northern boats were sunk by the US destroyers.

During the Viet War, approximately 8,000 US helicopters were crashed or destroyed from all causes. Many were recovered and scrapped. Over 2,000 US fixed wing(jets/airplanes) aircraft were destroyed. Nearly all of the US POWs held in NORTH Vietnam were US Airmen.
