The Coastlines of the South stretched for several thousand miles. The blockading efforts of the Union navy would be hard pressed to execute the best type of blockades. To do so, the US Navy deployed their ships into four squadrons to cover the vast area that the South presented. From the coastline of Texas to Florida and northwards to Virginia.
The Union blockade of major Southern ports was a method to cut off trade between the Confederacy and foreign countries. The South used torpedoes, fortifications around certain ports and privateers to circumvent Union warships blockading ports. It also had a small war fleet to attack Union ships.
The Union Navy sent warships to stop any shipping to or from the Confederate seaports. -it was in June of 1863, and it was during the civil war. -the union blockaded all of the confederate's army and military supplies. -this blockade came to an advantage in the battle of Gettysburg.
No battles were fought in Key West during the Civil War. It was occupied while under construction as the war began by Union troops. Since it was so impregnable, it remained in Union hands throughout the war despite being hundreds of miles behind "enemy" lines. Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West was exceedingly critical in the war due to it being the linchpin between the Gulf and the Atlantic Blockade Squadrons. Over 600 southern blockade runners were captured by the Union blockade patrols and sold at auction at Key West. The success of the blockade clearly cut the length of the war possibly by two years as the South ran out of the means to fight.
It allowed the Union and enabled them to control the river systems and to blockade the entire southern coastline.
During the first nine months of the US Civil War, the Union's blockade of Southern ports was not successful. In the year ending in 1861, nine out of ten ships eluded the Union's efforts. One reason was that the Northern navy simply needed more ships. Union shipyards were busy trying to fix that problem. Union shipyards had the great advantage of being geographically safe from harm. The Rebel army was just too far away.
At the beginning of the US Civil War, the US Navy created two blockading squadrons to hamper Rebel ports. One squadron was assigned for the Atlantic East coast and other one to cover the Southern Gulf coast. When the Blockade Board was formed, it divided the two squadrons into four squadrons. The Board believed this reconstruction of naval responsibilities would serve to better serve the Union's blockading policy.
