Vietnam was the longest war against another NATION. The war against Mexico (1846) only lasted about 2 yrs; against Spain (1898) about 6 months; Germany (1917) about 1 yr; Japan (1941) roughly 3 1/2 yrs; North Korea about 3 yrs; fighting ourselves (US Civil War) about 4 yrs; North Vietnam from about 1955 to 1973 directly (involving US blood) and until 1975 in-directly, but still drawing US blood (evacuation of Saigon and the baby lift). The last US military females killed in Vietnam were in 1975 (during operation baby lift, when their C-5 Galaxy crashed). The longest ever (although not against a NATION) war for America were the Indian wars, fought from the 1600's until Wounded Knee in 1890.

But of all those wars (including the Indian Wars), Vietnam was the only war in which the opposing NATION was victorious.
