There were 3 wars going on in Vietnam: 1. Naval war-Riverine Forces (Brown Water Navy): Swift Boats, PBR's, Monitors, Alpha Boats. 2. Ground war-US Army & US Marines. 3. Air War. The Air War was divided into two catagories; the war over the North, and the air war in the South supporting allied ground forces (CAS-Close Air Strikes). The Air War over North Vietnam was fought by the USN & USAF against the NVAF (North Vietnamese Air Force). North Vietnamese pilots flew the MIG-17 & MIG-21 jet fighters (which were supplied mostly by the USSR); and the MIG-19 (J-6 CHICOM version) jet fighter which was supplied by the Chinese Communists (CHICOM). The Air War over South Vietnam was fought by US aircraft, North Vietnamese pilots seldom, if ever, flew into SOUTH Vietnam. All of the US aircraft used in the air war up NORTH, were also used for ground support missions in South Vietnam: B-52 Stratofortress Strategic Bombers, B-57 Canberra Bombers, F-100 Supersabres, F-101 Voodoos, F-102 Delta Daggers (President Bush's jet), F-104 Starfighters (see book: Journey Into Darkness by LTC Philip Smith, a Starfighter in aerial combat with a Red Chinese J-6 (MIG-19), F-105 Thunderchiefs, A-1 Skyraiders (propeller driven-see film: Rescue Dawn), A-4 Skyhawk (Senator John McCain's jet), A-6 Intruder (film: Flight of the Intruder), A-7 Corsair II, F-4 Phantom II's (last US ACE's of the 20th century), F-8 Crusader (see film: HISTORY CHANNEL, Dog-Fights-"The Last Gunfighter").
