The Doolittle Raid was conducted with B-25 land based bombers. Planes designed to operate off of carriers would not have been able to carry enough ordnance to make it worth doing, and the carrier would have had to come far too close to Japan. Thus they came up with the crazy idea of launching large land-based bombers from an aircraft carrier. Although the B-25 could, just barely, take off from the carrier deck, they were far too big to land on it again. Even if they could have, though, the Hornet could not loiter for hours waiting for them to get back. It was far too dangerous. Thus the plan was for the planes to drop their bombs, then proceed on to China.
LTC Jimmy Doolittle had 16 US Army B-25 Mitchell twin engine medium bombers. Heavy bombers had four engines.
The Doolittle Raid was a bombing mission that was led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle. The raid took place on April 18th, 1942 as specially modified B-25 "Mitchell" medium bombers took off from the USS Hornet in the western Pacific Ocean. The target of the raid was Tokyo, Japan. The raid is significant in that it was a powerful Propaganda tool for the United States to bolster morale amongst its civilian and military populations.
I am still researching the details but what I found in Doolittle's autobiography was that most of the men survived, one crew was taken hostage and all of the planes were lost. On the upside - the targets Doolittle's men aimed for were successfully damaged.
I think you must mean General (then Colonel) James Doolittle. The "Doolittle Raiders" were sixteen medium bombers, B-25s, launched from an aircraft carrier, the USS Hornet. These were army bombers, much heavier than navy planes, and not intended to take off from a carrier. Carriers at the time did not have catapults to sling airplanes off the deck. The wings of these bombers did not fold like naval planes did, so only sixteen could be fitted on the deck, and none could be gotten down onto the hanger deck. Because the Hornet's deck was covered with these bombers she would be unable to operate her normal naval planes, and so had to be escorted by another carrier, the USS Enterprise. The US had only three aircraft carriers in the Pacific at the time so hazarding two of them on this mission was quite a risk to run. The mission is fairly well portrayed in the recent "Pearl Harbor" movie and was the subject of a much older, black-and-white film, "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo".The mission was on April 18, 1942. Little real damage was done to the four Japanese cities bombed, but the psychological effect was enormous, depressing the Japanese and giving a huge boost to American morale, only 4 1/2 months after Pearl Harbor. Colonel Doolittle went on to an illustrious career during the war, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for the raid on Japan.
Since they couldnt serve as soliders in the war they were they ones that built the planes, ships, bullets, and guns. They also served as test pilots for the planes that were built

The three American carriers launched a total of 42 torpedo planes during the Battle of Midway..15 from Hornet, 14 from Enterprise, and 13 from Yorktown. Of the 42 which attacked the Japanese carriers, only 7 returned. Yorktown lost 10, Enterprise lost 10, and Hornet lost all 15.
The Doolittle Raid is another name for the bombing of Tokyo on April 18, 1942. Eighty Army Air Corps men, lead by Jimmy Doolittle, took off from the aircraft carrier Hornet in sixteen B-25s on what was considered a suicide mission to bomb Tokyo and hopefully land in China. While nearly all of the men made it back, all but one of the planes crashed.

america did nothing in the immediate aftermath of pearl harbour as it had no planes that could make a return trip of that far. 4 months later sixteen US Army Airforce B-25 Mitchell bombers were launched from the USS Hornet deep in the western pacific. even these planes could not return and after bombing japan they went on to china and russia.for more info look up Doolittle raid
