Canada, the first country to be created by legislation, came into being on July 1, 1867, through the British North America Act (now the Constitution Act). The process has come to be known as "Confederation."
The pre-Confederation colony known as the Province of Canada joined with the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (s. 3) and the Province of Canada was then severed into the provinces of Ontario and Québec (s. 6).
