Yes. It is spoke and wrote in many nations, as the result of British influence in the 19th and 20th centuries. So in some senses, it is the lingua franca of Earth.

It is also the language of the first nations to have industrial revolutions and rapid technological progress - Great Britain and the United States. Therefore, most text books and manuals were wrote in English, and if one did not learn it, one could not keep up with the latest in mankind's discoveries. This soon became self-reinforcing, as any who wished a broad readership would publish in English to reach as many as possible.

It is also the language of air travel, as English speaking nations pioneered that. It is the international language of pilots.

English is also the largest language, for being so inclusive. With each wave of conquerors that came into England, the populace absorbed new and useful words. And with each takeover of another culture, England acquired new and useful words. The very fact that in English one refers to an international language as the "lingua franca", says much.

For all these reasons, English is very important as a language. And as an emerging power with 1.2 billion people in it (India) has it as one of it's official languages, it is likely to become even more important.

As the coup de gras, English is the language of the principle public and private developers of space travel. The United States, Europe and India all use it. As do billionaire entrepreneurs making their own private spaceships.

At some point, English needs to undergo a major revision, in spelling particularly. That we refer to our alphabet as "phonetic" is rather funny when you think about it. English oddities in spelling retards the learning of it abroad more than any other factor.

Many revisions have been proposed, but the expense - and perhaps impossibility - of rewriting all books, has kept it from happening. Nor does it seem likely that all would agree, so short of all the major English speaking nations agreeing at once, language reform will remain a dream.
