American support for Taiwan made China reluctant to improve relations with the US. The Vietnam War
The US didn't back a communist nation, Red China & the USSR backed them.
North of current Vietnam? Communist China.
Communist North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union and, later, by the People's Republic of China against the Capitalist US-supported South Vietnam.
Vietnam

Japan left Vietnam because the US won the Vietnam War. The US effectively kicked them out of the area. This was preventing China from invading Vietnam as well.

The Vietnam war
They were concerned because at the time, China was communist so (obviously) they were supporting the north of Vietnam. China could have been worried as America had been such a big force in WWII.
Laos was neutral. Nationalist China (Taiwan) was an ally but did NOT send men to Vietnam. If Taiwan had gotten involved in Vietnam, Red China might have gotten involved too. Red China and Nationalist China were bitter enemies in the 1960's.
Since China was dirt poor in the 70s so Nixon made an agreement with China. If US troops withdraw from Vietnam war, China will not support the USSR. Thus American troops withdraw from Vietnam, causing the communist in Vietnam achieve victory. But in 15 years later without China's help, the USSR collapse. That's why you see China was never in the Warsaw Pact.
