Under Adolf Hitler, Germany declared war on Poland in September of 1939. With Polish forces concentrating on the Nazi blitzkrieg on its western border, Stalin, as per the secret part of the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact occupied Eastern Poland with almost without a fight. Stalin felt the need however, to execute approximately 15,000 Polish army officers and other military soldiers in the forests of eastern Poland. The Nazi invasion ended with Poland's surrender by the end of the month. As an aside, military historians call the Soviet occupation of Poland as an invasion. As an excuse to invade Poland, Hitler claimed that Poles violated the border with Germany and also committed crimes on German soil. This was not true.

In theory there was supposed to be a section of France that was free of German control. But, the Nazis and Hitler lived up to their true colors and occupied it and controlled it in the end. At the end of the War, the French prosecuted and penalized the leaders that put them into the position of being occupied by Germany.
Hitler, fearing another two front war as in World War 1 conducted the Non-Agression Pact. This pact made both Germany and Russia neutral between one another and they both shared the lands of occupied Poland. This concealed the true incentive of Hitler, who used the pact to enshroud his conquest of Russia and give the country's occupants a false sense of security. Alligning with Slavs, mere "subhumans" was out of the question in real terms. Afterwards, he broke the pact and attacked Russia in Operation Barbarossa which literally meant defeat for Germany and it's "Aryan" people.

Because after WW1, the Danzig Corridor was given to Poland, separating east Prussia from the rest of Germany. The Bolsheviks intially considered allowing German access to their cut off territory. The USA (indirectly) and UK offered assurances to Poland, who set about murdering Germans, and refusing access to the territory. Hitler invaded, and the UK declared war.
