Because the Jews fought for survival instead of gain or glory. Although attacked on every front by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia, etc, the Israelis were well organized and applied their strengths effectively to protect themselves as best they could...the alternative promised by the Arabs was total annihilation. Arab effectiveness was reduced by poor coordination and communication between states as many considered their partners as competition for gain of territory and honors. The exception was East Jerusalem where the Arab Legion under British command ethnically cleansed the Old City of its large Jewish population until regained by the Israelis 19 years later.
