The German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 succeeded in part because they attacked with no warning. The Soviet Union didn't have time to react to the German army's invasion.
It was readmitted through the process of Reconstruction.
The purpose of the North in deciding to prevent any states from seceding from the Union was accomplished. However, as with any war, the goal of restoring good will and loyalty among the former Confederate leaders failed due the North's Reconstruction policies and racism by many Southerners.
Union Leagues
Lincoln's and Johnsons reconstruction plans both focused on pardoning the confedrate states and restoring the union quickly.
Reconstruction was partially effective in restoring the Southern states to the Union, as it did reestablish federal authority and integrate formerly Confederate states back into the political framework of the United States. However, it faced significant resistance and backlash, leading to the establishment of Jim Crow laws and a resurgence of white supremacist groups, which undermined many of its achievements. Ultimately, while it laid the groundwork for civil rights advancements, the withdrawal of federal troops in 1877 and the subsequent rise of segregationist policies demonstrated the limitations of Reconstruction's success.
President Andrew Johnson's plan for reconstruction offered pardon and amnesty to participants in the rebellion who pledged loyalty to the Union. Andrew Johnson succeeded Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated in April of 1865.

At the end of the Civil War, the South lay in ruins. Three requirements the North demanded included restoring the Union, transforming southern society, and enacting progressive legislation favoring the rights of the freed slaves.
Luckily for Lincoln, none of the boarder state seceded. All succeeded in staying in the union.
Abraham Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction focused on restoring unity and healing the nation after the Civil War. His approach, known as the Ten Percent Plan, offered amnesty to Southerners who took an oath of loyalty to the Union and supported the abolition of slavery. He believed in a lenient and forgiving approach towards the South, aiming to quickly reintegrate the Confederate states back into the Union.
