EVERYTHING is more expensive for today's military; from pay to uniforms, from fuel to aircraft. Today's military personnel are volunteers...consequently they receive far more pay than Vietnam GIs did.
In Vietnam a drafted man received about $300 per month (as an E-4). He was GI-Government Issue...but everything was free...food...cigarettes...uniforms (today servicemembers pay for their uniforms with a uniform allowance). A Vietnam era jet fighter cost LESS than a million dollars, the F4 Phantom II cost about 2 million dollars.
Just one modern 21st century jet costs about 20 million dollars. By far most of the monies spent in Vietnam went to bombs and artillery shells and other ammunition. Over 7 million tons of bombs were dropped in the Vietnam War; over twice as many that were dropped in all of WWII! Iraq nor Afghanistan need that many bombs, as smart weapons negate that need. Nor does Iraq or Afghanistan have the targets necessitating such an expenditure.
The US lost over 2,000 jets and 8,000 helicopters, not to mentioned 300,000 wounded and 58,000 dead men. The price alone in those jets and helicopters would amount to billions.

Easily millions a month. The loss of one jet was $1,000,000. Which is part of the reason the US Navy battleship USS New Jersey (Iowa class) was activated for deployment on the gun-line in Vietnam; to reduce jet losses.

For the United States, the Vietnam War has been estimated to have cost about $700 Billion dollars, at today's prices.
The US objective was to bolster the government of South Vietnam and keep it from being taken over by North Vietnam. The US spent much money and human life trying to achieve this goal, but in 1975 South Vietnam collapsed under a North Vietnamese invasion.
If what you spent on the investment was less then what you received when you sold it, it is called your "profit". If what you spent on the investment was more then what you received when you sold it, it is called your "loss".
Andrew Carnegie how he spent his money
The united states produced 1,861,500,000 barrels of oil last year.
America's policy was that we had spent enough lives and money trying to save a corrupt and inept country that couldn't defend itself (South Vietnam). Now it was time to let the inevitable happen, and that was to let South Vietnam fall to North Vietnam. The USA did it's best, but, we couldn't do anymore.
