Harriet Tubman was born Araminta "Minty" Ross to slave parents, Harriet ("Rit") Green and Ben Ross. Her parents were owned by Mary Brodess, and by Mary's second husband Anthony Thompson, respectively.

Although she married a free man, John Tubman, in 1844, she did not escape from slavery until 1849, fleeing from Maryland to Pennsylvania, a free state. She returned, beginning in 1850, to help her family and others escape.
