Louis-Joseph Papineau was a hero, not a traitor or a coward. He was a hero because he supported the Methodists, Presbyterians and the Jews in debate over the bill pointed at giving Protestants the right to keep civil register indexes. He sponsored a law which gave political rights to Jews. He was a savior of the rebellion of 1837. He played an important role in the rebellion in Lower Canada.
Wat Tyler may have been a hero to his followers in the Peasant's Rebellion, but would have appeared to be a traitor to his king.

In a dangerous situation, the hero thinks of others first and acts. The coward thinks of himself first, maybe doing nothing. Both can be fearful, but the hero channels his fear in a positive way.
