On October 19, 1864, Confederate Lieutenant Bennett H. Young led a small force into St. Albans, Vermont. The raid was more of a psychological gesture than anything else. Needless to say the towns people were shocked and Young and his men robbed three banks. They battled with the residents and then fled to the Canadian border. Young became a POW and a few of his troops were able to reach safety in Canada.
