The death of Prince Albert at age 42 was diagnosed by his doctors as due to typhoid fever and this has been the traditional answer ever since. In recent years, the diagnosis of his doctors has been questioned since there were no other deaths from the infectious disease in that area at the time, Albert had been ill for some years with stomach problems, and mid Victorian medicine was not very competent. It has been suggested that Albert really had stomach cancer.

His wife Queen Victoria blamed their eldest son for his father's death as Albert had been very upset to discover his young heir's affair with an actress. Victoria felt that the revelation of their son's immoral nature had broken his father's heart and he died of grief.
