The Black Panther Party was a militant group of African-Americans (the majority of whom were male) who were members of the Black Power movement. They started in the mid 1960s, and advocated for change in what they believed was a racist society. Some of their advocacy was positive (they became known in many urban communities for feeding the poor and helping the homeless); but their rhetoric was often angry and violent, and some white people found them very threatening, especially when the group spoke out in favor of black people arming themselves (the Black Panthers believed that the police were frequently guilty of racist behavior, and that black people should be ready to defend themselves).

During the Civil Rights Movement, when leaders like Martin Luther King were preaching change through peaceful protest and non-violence, the Black Panthers had a message that even some in the black community found radical. On the other hand, they taught black pride and stood up for the rights of black people in their communities, so while some of their tactics caused problems for them, there were many people who respected what the Panthers were trying to accomplish.
