The Civil Rights Movement began following Rosa Park's arrest which led to Martin Luther King Junior's (MLK) starting of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
"Weapons" consisted of sit-ins, marching protests, boycotting of buses, freedom bus riding, voting, pray-ins, etc. The civil rights movement was mainly an amazing era of peaceful protest, which MLK drew from Ghandi's philosophies and actions.
The best part of this era was the willingness of the African Americans and some whites to participate and work together for a just cause. These people, who were the best of their generation, marched and protested in peacefulness, knowing that they were subject to lynching, attacks from police dogs, electric cattle prods, killing, rape, etc.
Their weapon was their will, their submission to attack in order to make a point.
Following MLK's death, younger hot-headed African American generations took control, berating the peaceful strikes. They resorted to violent acts, which ended the peaceful civil rights movement.
