There were several reasons that the Underground Railroad was important in the days before the US Civil War. Firstly it gave hope to slaves who knew about this "passage" out of the slave holding states. In addition to "hope" it provided action in that slaves were assisted by abolitionists in the North and many of the escaped slaves found freedom in British controlled Canada. Another reason it was important was that it gave the common people in the North a way to assist in helping play a role in defeating a small amount of slavery that it did. This is is noted in that that so very often the rich population of the North funded these operations.
