The Confederates gained momentum in several US Civil War battles. The First Battle of Bull Run was expected to be a Northern victory by most Union based pundits. Northern leaders were shocked although there were a number of Union military figures such as General in Chief Winfield Scott who knew the Union was not quite ready to launch an attack into Virginia.Later, the much heralded General George B. McClellan's defeat during the Peninsula campaign surprised and disappointed President Lincoln. Blame for the failure in the North was divided between the Lincoln administration and Republicans who saw McClellan as a poor battlefield commander.

As the war moved along, there were shifts in momentum based on the results of major battles such as the Confederate win at the Second Battle of Bull Run and Northern confidence with the victory at Gettysburg.

Why did the South win the first battle of the Civil War?

The battle at Bull Run was a Confederate victory because they had better field commanders than did the Union. Lincoln had not yet found a Union General who was willing to fight regardless of the casualties inflicted. The first battle of the Civil War is generally considered to be Fort Sumter. The South won that because it had more men, more artillery and could easilly besiege the Federal force occupying the Fort. The Battle of 1st Manassas/Bull Run was won because the Federal Army was exhausted from a long march around the Confederate flank which was relatively fresh and was then reinforced throughout the battle. This Battle was the first major battle of the war.

Which best describes how the North and South enlisted their armies during the Civil War?

The Southern army was not as organized as the North. The North had special stations where people could enlist. They also had a set age that you had to be to enlist in the army (without much effect). The South was much less organized. In the South as long as you could hold a rifle you could join the army. There were no booths where you could enlist. To enlist all you had to do is go to a military camp or base of operations and tell them you wanted to fight. Then they would hand you a rifle and some gear and you were off to battle.
