King Philip's War, occurring from 1675 to 1678 and known by various names, was caused by tensions between European (mostly English) colonists, supported by some Native allies, and various Native American tribes in the New England region of North America. Among other problems, the general encroachment of the colonists on Native land, along with broken or at least ambiguously upheld agreements and treaties, led Natives to become increasingly restless, with King Philip (or Metacomet) finally emerging as the dynamic leader in their ultimately unsuccessful fight against the colonists.
