Victory over Japan in WW2 was secured by the atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the USAF.

On the 6th August, the B-29 Superfortress 'Enola Gay' dropped a nuclear device on the city of Hroshima. This was followed on the 9th August by a similar attack on the port city of Nagasaki by the Superfortress 'Bock's Car'. Soon afterwards, Japanese Emperor Hirohito realised that Japan could not hope to compete with such overwhelming military power, and that his country risked total nuclear annihilation if he were to continue to prosecute the war any further. He thus surrendered to the Allies soon afterwards, despite some of his fanatical Generals wanting to continue the war at any cost.
