Obviously, not being free and being treated like property were major problems: since slaves were owned by their masters, they could be beaten or forced to work long hours without food or water or, in the case of female slaves, raped. They had no legal protection of any kind. Further, they were denied the right to an education, so most were unable to read and write and did not know what to do about their inhumane treatment. And the people you might expect to come to their defense, such as members of the clergy, often did not: in fact, many churches taught that the slaves were inferior and that God wanted them to be dominated by white people.
