Due to the long and narrow shape of the Italian peninsula, the are only two cities in Italy which are to the east of Rome: L' Aquila and Pescara. The other cities are either to its southeast or northeast.

Due to the southeastward tilt of the Italian peninsula, there are only a few cities or provincial capitals to its northeast and a great many to its southeast.

The the northeast of Rome there are only Chieti, Ascoli, Macerata, Ancona, Pesaro, Rimini. Trieste, Pordenone and Udine.

Th the southeast of Rome, in the mainland, there are Frosinone, Teramo, Isernia, Campobasso, Caserta, Naples, ,Benevento, Avellino, Salerno, Potenza, Matera, Foggia, Bari, Brindisi, Lecce, Taranto, Cosenza, Crotone, Catanzarro, and Reggio Calabria. Pretty much the whole of Sicily, and all its nine provincial capitals are also the the southeast.
