The Etruscans in Italy had a large impact on early Roman development. In fact, Etruscan kings ruled ancient Rome long before Rome established its republic. Etruscans held gladiator games for entertainment and used crucifixion as a means to enforce death penalties.

The other major influence on ancient Rome ( and most everywhere in the Mediterranean world) was Greek culture. Early Romans consulted with the sages at the Greek temples at Delphi and at the oldest of Greek temples, Dedona. In summary the Greek culture influenced Rome through:

A. To a degree Greek architecture was used by the Romans for their temples and public buildings ( later Roman architecture advanced further and the "dome & arch were Roman specialties ).

B. Roman gods were "borrowed" from Greek gods to a large degree.

C. The early Roman military adopted the Greek battle formation called the phalanx. Later the Romans improved their military tactics by abandoning this and created a new battle formation for its legions. The phalanx proved to be awkward when the terrain was not a flat plane. The Romans continued to improve their battle formations and they by far excelled that of any ancient power to date. The infantry was the basic branch of the military and the new battle tactics were much like regiments, battalions, companies and platoons.

D. Early Rome and far into the days of the Republic saw Romans become involved with ancient Greek poetry and philosophies.

E. So impressed by Greece, Greek slaves were frequently reachers to the youths of wealth Roman families.
