Germany occupied most of Europe during Hitler's reign as Chancellor and President of Germany, and during World War II. The countries Germany occupied were as follows:

  • Austria (annexed in 1938)
  • Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland annexed in 1938, rest of country occupied in 1939)
  • Poland (western half acquired in German invasion of Poland in 1939)
  • Denmark (occupied in the early part of 1940)
  • Norway (occupied immediately following the conquest of Denmark in early 1940)
  • France (secured by the German offensive campaign in the West in May and June of 1940)
  • Luxembourg (fell when France fell)
  • Belgium and Holland (taken in initial assault before the full invasion of France began)
  • Present-day Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Finland (taken when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in June of 1941)
  • Greece (Secured before the German invasion of the USSR in early 1941)
  • Egypt (Acquired when Hitler joined the war in North Africa to help Mussolini)
  • Italy (occupied in 1942-43 when Hitler deemed that Mussolini was not dedicating his full efforts to defending his country from the Allied forces)
  • Hungary (occupied in 1944 when the Hungarians tried to defect to the Allies to prevent the Soviets from handling their country harshly)
  • Romania (occupied in 1944 for the same reasons as for the occupation of Hungary)
  • Bulgaria (occupied in 1944 because Hitler feared a defection to the Allies after the overthrow of his puppet was imminent)
  • Yugoslavia (occupied when Tito took over as the head of the country in 1944)
