Charlemagne was initially King of the West Franks. Then, when his brother Carloman, King of the East Franks, died, Charlemagne became King of the Franks. In 800 AD, Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the Roman People by Pope Leo III.
Today, historians call Charlemagne's empire the Carolingian Empire in order to distinguish it from all the other empires that called themselves the Empire of the Roman People, including the ancient Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Holy Roman Empire.
