Ignoring his conquest of Gaul and his winning of the civil war, (he was not ruler of Rome at those times), Julius Caesar accomplished several things that enhanced his standing with the masses. He built a forum and temple and enlarged and beautified the Circus Maximus. He posted the first daily newspaper in the Forum which relayed to the public the actions of the senate. Runners copied the postings and sent them off to the provinces so everyone who was interested could know what the senate was doing. He pushed two land bills through the senate, one to give Pompey's veterans land and another to help some of the urban poor. He gave some debt relief by reforming interest rates. One of his most relevant accomplishments was the reforming of the calendar. He also tried to put a stop to extortion in the provinces by corrupt tax collectors.
