A peasant is by definition a farmer. Most medieval peasants in Western Europe raised grain crops, animals, and vegetable crops. In addition, they did whatever work was necessary to keep equipment and infrastructure in good order. Peasants also worked for hire, as their schedules permitted. They provided labor for building roads, fortifications, churches, and so on, for example.

Not all peasants were serfs. Some were independent farmers who owned their land or were otherwise independent tenants.
