The Great Migration sent millions of people to live in Canada and the U.S. Most of these people were from the British Isles which includes the countries of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Irish came to Canada and the U.S. because their main food was potatoes, but the potatoes caught a disease called blight which is caused when the sun gives too much sunlight to the potatoes. This caused the Potatoe Femine. They had a choice of either coming to America or to stay in Ireland and die of starvation. The British came because electricity and machines were discovered and one machine could do the work of ten people, so many were fired. They then lost their homes and decided to come to America. The Scottish came because in India, cotton was discovered and the people could get it for a lower cost then wool. This caused trouble to the Scottish because they could not grow cotton there, so they tried to raise more sheep. The Scottish farmers rented the land only to be kicked off the land by the ranchers they rented land from. This then caused the Scottish to come to America. The citizens of Wales were to be fired from their jobs because electricity was discovered, so the people made machines, taking the jobs of an estimated ten people per machine causing them to come to America. When all these people came, the people needed more demands. For example: when the Scottish came, they thought it was important to construct schools and universities therefore causing the first universities in the new world. As more people came to America, the population grew and more buildings were being made. The villages became towns and towns became cities. If it weren't for the Great Migration we probably wouldn't be here at this very moment on Answers.com asking and answering questions!
