Parliament passed acts called the "intolerable acts" by the colonist because it closed off the harbor in Boston to shipping. The king also sent more troops to the colonies and he saw the whole event as if the colonist were children who needed to be disciplined. It wasn't until Bunker Hill that the king understood what was happening in the colonies. By then it was too late and the war was on.

A few months after the Boston Tea Party, the Parliament passed a series of four laws intended to punish the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Collectively, these four laws were called the Coercive Acts (known as the Intolerable Acts in the United States):

1. Boston Port Act – closed the Port of Boston until the full value of the destroyed tea was reimbursed to the appropriate owners.
2. Quartering Act of 1774 – amendment to the earlier Quartering Act of 1765, repealing the requirement that colonists house British troops. Such arrangements now had to be made in mutual agreement. This act was actually well-received by the colonists.
3. Administration of Justice Act – allowed royally-appointed officials who were accused of a crime in Massachusetts to be instead tried back in Great Britain, ostensibly to guarantee impartiality.
4. Massachusetts Government Act – revoked the charter for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, thereby also revoking the colony's ability to self-govern. This act placed Massachusetts under direct control as a Crown Colony, similar to other colonies such as Bermuda or Jamaica.
