The flag was basically the US flag now.
The flags that Columbus flew on the Santa Maria were the Spanish flag and the flag of the King and Queen of Spain Ferdinand and Isabella as described in his log book dated October 12th 1492. The king and queen's flag had a green "F" to the left of a green cross in the middle and a green "Y" to the right. A gold crown was above each of the letters "F" and "Y." "Ferdinand" and "Ysabel." This flag was an "ensign" flag which meant that it would have been flown on the stern (read deck) of the ships. The Spanish flag was from the "Kingdom of Castile and Leon" showed two yellow/gold castles on a red background (upper left and lower right) and two red lions on a white background (upper right and lower left).
The Spanish in 1480 was very simple and it had three horizontal segments with the center part being yellow and the other two were red. There was a coat of arms that was placed on the yellow band.
