Infantrymen in Vietnam had to carry rucksacks on their backs. These "back packs" contained ammunition, C rations, claymore anti-personnel mines, canteens (sometimes 5 or more of them), sleeping gear, maybe some extra hand grenades, possibly some trip flares and wire to go with them, extra socks, etc. Together this added up to 30 to 50 pounds or more...depending upon how much ammo and extra grenades he was carrying. ADDED to this was his steel helmet, rifle or machine gun (21 pounds), extra bandoliers of M16 ammo (7 magazine pouches per bandolier, each magazine loaded with 18 to 20 rounds of .223 ammo (5.56mm). With all this weight, the infantrymen had to walk up steep hills with thick vegetation, called "jungles" in Hollywood jargon. Often with no trails...had to hack one's way thru them, or use their bodies to bull doze their way through. Then came the heat with it's humidity. Men grunted when they had to move. When resting, men had to hold an arm up so another man could grab it and pull him up; couldn't stand up without help. If a grunt was alone, and took a break by lying down, when it was time to move, he had to roll onto his hands and knees, then using his rifle as a crutch, struggle into the standing position; then commence his march. You could hear the men "grunt" as they struggled to begin marching. Only the infantryman is a grunt: Tank crewmen, Artillerymen, Pilots, Sailors, Military Policemen, etc. are not grunts. In WW2, infantrymen were called "dog faces." "Ground Pounder" was another name used. In Vietnam, the US Army MOS code for infantryman was 11B...we called it "11Bush" (because grunts almost always had to break bush) and when it was a bad week..."11 Bullet stopper."
The Leeds Salute is now a well established part of our culture, to do it make a fist with your right arm place the thumb edge of the fist on your heart, extend your arm fully outwards and slightly upwards. The salute is used when we get a corner kick and is accompanied but a low grunting LEEDS LEEDS LEEDS."

Grunting is a simple vocal tic
I think of it as anti-socialable talking. Its either the type of grunting were they don't really care, or the type of grunting were they are too busy doing something else and can't be bothered to answer properly. It can also mean that they are in a really big huff with you and don't want to talk to you. Hope I helped! :D
