The Chinese immigrant community was largely responsible for building much of the railroad in the U.S. West, particularly the Central Pacific Railroad. They played a crucial role in overcoming the challenging terrain of the Sierra Nevada and faced significant discrimination and hardships during their work. Despite their contributions, they were often marginalized and denied recognition for their efforts in the construction of the transcontinental railroad.

The two main lines were the Union Pacific (coming from Omaha, Nebraska) and the Western Pacific (coming from Sacramento, California). The Western Pacific workers were mostly Chinese. How could those small, scrawny workers be able to build over 150 miles of railroad? If they could do the Great Wall of China, they could certainly build a railroad. The Union Pacific workers were mostly American. It was easy for them because they had all their resources on the same continent, unlike the others who had to import from China.
The western portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, called the Central Pacific, was built mostly by Chinese immigrants. The popular term for these laborers was Celestials since China was known as the Celestial Kingdom.
